Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq asked industrial parks to comply with environmental regulations, including by creating a road map to improve air quality in the Greater Jakarta area.

During a meeting with industrial park business players here on Thursday, he said that his ministry needs to carry out discussions with business players to preserve and improve the environment, for instance, by reducing air pollution.

"There are steps that we must take jointly based on the road map that we will discuss together. We must improve Jakarta's air quality seriously," he stressed.

He said that the provisions related to air quality management have been laid down in the regulations issued by the government.

However, he noted that there are still many that have not been implemented optimally, including the appeal to build air quality monitoring stations (SPKUs) in industrial parks.

This is deemed necessary considering that industrial parks also contribute to air pollution, for instance, due to the use of coal-fired boilers. There is also the open burning of garbage and exhaust gas from goods transport vehicles.

"Of course, we want an intense collaboration. Maybe we could have a forum so that we can prioritize prevention and guidance instead of law enforcement," he added.

He asked regional governments to provide guidance and supervision to industrial parks and business players to comply with applicable regulations.

If they do not comply even after receiving guidance, the regional governments must take legal action against them, he said.

The minister then called on all industrial park managers to establish SPKUs to address potential air pollution ahead of the dry season.

Nurofiq affirmed that several industrial parks have installed or are planning to set up a station for automatic and continuous air quality monitoring, which will provide factual or real-time data.
