The dispatch of the second team of medical professionals, comprising four specialist physicians and one dentist, follows a previous BSMI deployment of two specialists who are scheduled to return on April 19, 2025.
"We are embarking on this mission to treat patients in dire need," head of the BSMI doctor team, Prof. Dr. dr. Basuki Supartono, said at a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.
"We humbly request your prayers for our health, strength, and ease throughout this endeavor," he added.
Outlining the team's travel plans, he informed that they would leave for Jordan by plane on Tuesday morning (April 15) and then continue overland to Gaza.
"We remain hopeful that the border crossing process will proceed without hindrance. We earnestly request your blessings, as official permission from the Israeli authorities is a prerequisite for our entry," he said.
To mitigate potential obstruction from Israeli authorities, Supartono emphasized the team's proactive preparations, including close coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO).
He informed that several members of the medical team have received Emergency Medical Team (EMT) certification from the WHO, granting their presence in Gaza international recognition.
Furthermore, Supartono highlighted the team's prior experience in treating war casualties, with several doctors having previously served in Rafah, Palestine, addressing similar critical medical needs.
"However, it's crucial to acknowledge that border crossing authorization rests solely with the Israeli government, not the WHO. Therefore, we sincerely hope for a smooth and unobstructed entry," he said.
He added that the medical team will serve at the Gaza European Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, for 14 days.
To increase the likelihood of obtaining entry permits from the Israeli authorities, the team is not taking specific medical equipment or aid supplies for the assignment.
Supartono assured that the necessary medical supplies and resources for providing healthcare services in Gaza will be readily provided by the Gaza European Hospital.
"To the Indonesian people, we urge your unwavering support for the Palestinian cause," he said.
"Echoing President Prabowo's sentiment, we must actively intervene to alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza," he added.
