Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Acting Governor of Papua, Ramses Limbong, announced that the inauguration of the Ministry of Health’s General Hospital in Jayapura, scheduled for June 2025, aims to improve healthcare access for the people of Papua.

The hospital will not only serve the local community but also function as a teaching hospital.

“It will be a teaching hospital for medical students from Cenderawasih University,” he said here on Sunday.

Limbong expressed hope that the new hospital will significantly enhance access to quality healthcare, especially for residents in remote areas of Papua.

“It will expand healthcare access for Papuans, particularly those in hard-to-reach regions,” he added.

He also emphasized the importance of employing Indigenous Papuans (OAP) at the hospital to help reduce local unemployment.

“I request that the hospital’s workforce prioritize OAP or residents of Papua, especially for healthcare positions,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Acting Director of Human Resources, Education, and Research at Jayapura General Hospital, Nyoman Dharma, explained that the facility is also being developed as an international referral hospital, particularly for Pacific countries such as Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.

“The facilities already meet national standards, and we currently have 250 beds ready,” he said.

For the initial phase, he explained, the Jayapura General Hospital will open an Emergency Room (IGD) with a capacity of 35 beds, followed by outpatient clinic services.“The soft opening is planned for the end of April, and the official inauguration will be led by President Prabowo Subianto in June,” Dharma concluded.
