According to a statement from Sugiono's office, cited here on Thursday (April 24), the upcoming meeting will spotlight a range of global and regional issues, particularly politics and security, global governance reform, and the role of the Global South in multilateralism.
The statement outlined the minister's primary mission as advocating for a stable international order, urging BRICS to play a more constructive role in maintaining peace and upholding universal norms.
He also plans to accentuate the urgent need for reform across various multilateral institutions, calling for more inclusive, transparent, and responsive frameworks to address contemporary global challenges.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Sugiono is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his counterparts from other countries.
The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry also noted that the meeting would include discussions on preparations for the next BRICS Summit, scheduled for July 6–7 in Rio de Janeiro, with a special focus on the formulation of key documents.
These documents are currently being drafted by the member states of BRICS, which now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is expected to result in a joint statement reaffirming member countries' shared commitments to politics, security, the economy, development, global governance reform, and other critical issues.
In addition to official members, Brazil has invited foreign ministers from partner countries, including Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
While this meeting will be Indonesia’s first official participation as a BRICS member, the country has earlier taken part in at least 70 BRICS-organized meetings before securing membership in January this year.
