Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti confirmed that technology major Google is ready to arrange coding and artificial intelligence (AI) training for teachers to support the government's decision to offer them as school subjects.

"We have met with Google, and they are ready to train at least one million teachers in coding and artificial intelligence," he informed at the 2025 National Consolidation of Primary and Secondary Education in Depok, West Java, on Tuesday.

The minister added that coding and AI subjects can be Internet-based, device-based, and non-device-based.

Mu'ti further said that coding and AI will be offered as elective subjects in grades 5 and 6 of elementary school, besides junior high school and vocational school/senior high school.

He expressed the hope that the introduction of coding and AI from the elementary school level would improve digital literacy, boost computational thinking skills, and increase the productive and responsible use of AI technology, especially among students.

For elementary students, the learning materials for coding will include solving daily problems involving structured thinking with the help of learning aids, such as wooden blocks.

Meanwhile, their AI learning will cover understanding the impact of AI in daily life, upholding ethics in the use of AI, distinguishing AI and non-AI technology, and understanding the basic concepts of input-process-output.

Coding and AI are targeted to be offered in the new academic year, which starts in July 2025.

In elementary, junior high, and grade 10 of senior high school, the subjects will be taught for 2 hours per week.

Meanwhile, for grades 11 and 12 of senior high school, they will be taught for 4 hours per week.
