Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is pursuing partnerships to build 5G connectivity, technology, and innovation in Indonesia to accelerate the national digital transformation.

"We realize that the 5G ecosystem cannot be built by the government alone," director general of digital infrastructure at the ministry, Wayan Toni Supriyanto, told ANTARA on Thursday.

He underscored that his ministry is actively engaging with industry players, such as the Indonesian Telematics Society (Mastel), telecommunications service provider associations, and 5G device vendors.

To build partnerships with industry players and associations, the ministry is pursuing collaboration in several forms, including involving communities and industry players in formulating policies and regulations.

It is also conducting case study trials for 5G technology innovations, for example, trials of 5G utilization for smart factories that allow tasks to be automated.

"Third, the collaboration is encouraged to provide radio frequency spectrum, especially in frequency bands that are still used for other services, for instance, satellite," he informed.

To increase 5G connectivity and utilization in Indonesia, the ministry is also pursuing bilateral cooperation with other countries.

In the last two years, three countries have expressed interest and held strategic dialogues with Indonesia on the utilization and expansion of 5G connectivity, namely India, Russia, and Japan.

Supriyanto said that on Monday, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, held a bilateral meeting with the Indian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, in Jakarta.

He noted that at the meeting, which was a follow-up to the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by Indonesia and India in January 2025, the two parties explored partnerships in 5G and AI.

Meanwhile, Indonesia and Russia on April 15, 2025, agreed to enhance strategic cooperation in communication and digital technology, including through the development of 5G cellular networks.

During a bilateral dialogue on April 23, Japan expressed interest in developing 5G technology based on Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) in Indonesia.
