The West Papua provincial government has affirmed its commitment to strengthening the capacity of educators and ensuring adequate educational facilities and infrastructure to improve the educational environment.
During an address in Manokwari District on Saturday, West Papua Governor Dominggus Mandacan emphasized that these efforts align with one of President Prabowo Subianto's core missions to improve the quality of human resources.
Regarding capacity-building, he announced plans to encourage teachers to partake in a range of training programs.
He affirmed that the provincial government would soon launch a program to help educators adopt an engaging and enjoyable approach to teaching mathematics, designed to assure students that the subject is not as challenging as it may appear.
This teaching method places emphasis on the ability of pupils to count quickly without the use of tools such as calculators.
“This initiative is set to have been running by mid-May 2025,” he stated, noting that his administration will partner with a foundation specializing in education and research in science, technology, and mathematics.
The governor expressed hope that trained teachers would not only make mathematics more appealing to students but also share their newfound knowledge with fellow educators.
Mandacan then underscored his government's determination to elevate the living standards of teachers serving the nation in the province, adding that leaders of districts share this goal.
Regarding improvements in facilities and infrastructure, Mandacan underlined that the provincial government had been working to prepare a site for the construction of a school under the Garuda Top-tier School national program.
He noted that Manokwari, as the provincial capital, is envisioned to host a Garuda school equipped with dormitories.
This plan will be complemented by the development of tuition-free boarding schools for economically disadvantaged children across the province under another national initiative called Sekolah Rakyat, or People's School.
“People’s Schools are intended to give economically disadvantaged residents access to quality education,” he emphasized.
