Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed confidence in Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen's ability to help achieve shared goals within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
"I am convinced that Your Excellency's insights can advance our collective work towards maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Southeast Asian region," he remarked while hosting the former Cambodian prime minister at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday.
In his opening speech during the bilateral meeting, Prabowo said receiving the Cambodian Senate President in Indonesia was a great honor.
The Indonesian head of state expressed his pleasure at reconnecting with Senate President Hun Sen after their last meeting in Phnom Penh in September 2024, before Prabowo's presidential inauguration the following month.
Prabowo then praised Hun Sen's strategic role in Southeast Asia and welcomed the Cambodian leader's plan to share his views on peacebuilding efforts in Cambodia at the ERIA School of Government and the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta the following day.
Turning to Indonesia's role, the president emphasized that his country remains steadfast in its commitment to prioritizing dialogue and reconciliation in resolving conflicts in the region.
"As a peace broker for Cambodia in the 1980s and 1990s, Indonesia's commitment remains the same. We will always resort to dialogue and reconciliation to address every conflict. Our priority is to resolve conflicts peacefully," he stated.
Hun Sen and his delegation arrived at the Merdeka Palace at 11:15 a.m. local time, where they were welcomed by guards of honor, cavalry troops, and elementary school students waving the national flags of Indonesia and Cambodia.
President Prabowo personally greeted Hun Sen and escorted him to the welcoming ceremony, during which the national anthems of both countries were played alongside cannon salutes.
The two leaders then conducted a troop inspection before introducing members of their respective delegations.
The Indonesian delegation included Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, and Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian.
