Palembang, S Sumatra (ANTARA) - Chairperson of the Indonesian Comedians Association (PaSKI) for South Sumatra, Fikri Haikal, confirmed here on Wednesday that South Sumatra province will host the National Comedy Day declaration event.

He said that the event will take place in Palembang on May 18, 2025.

He noted that the chosen date for National Comedy Day coincides with the birth date of Indonesian comedy legend Bing Slamet, who was born on September 27, 1927.

“We are ready to host the declaration of National Comedy Day, which falls on Bing Slamet’s birthday,” he said.

Referring to a statement by Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, Haikal emphasized that laughter has health benefits, especially considering the growing mental health challenges in the increasingly complex era of today.

Hence, comedy, in its various forms, holds great potential to support public mental well-being.

Endorsements for the designation of National Comedy Day have come from several legislators and public figures.

They include Senator Alfiansyah Bustami, popularly known as Komeng; Denny Wahyudi (Denny Cagur); and Eko Hendro Purnomo (Eko Patrio), a member of the House of Representatives (DPR); as well as Dailani Firdaus, a patron to the PaSKI central board.

In preparation for the declaration, PaSKI is conducting a series of promotional activities across several regions, including South Sumatra, West Java, and East Kalimantan.

“PaSKI South Sumatra was chosen (to host the declaration event) because it recently won an award at the Indonesian Comedy Awards, being recognized for its frequent activities,” Haikal said.

The declaration event will be joined by some renowned local figures, with the hope that it not only entertains the public but also inspires more people to participate in the creative arts industry.
