Denpasar (ANTARA) - Indonesia is set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Cambodia to strengthen cooperation in combating human trafficking and cybercrime, a minister announced on Tuesday.

The agreement will also cover collaboration on tackling cybercrimes such as skimming (data theft) and scamming (online fraud), according to Indonesia's Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto.

He noted that cooperation between the two countries since early this year has resulted in the successful repatriation of around 500 Indonesian migrant workers who had been trapped in online gambling operations in Cambodia.

Andrianto met with Cambodian immigration officials on Monday in Nusa Dua, Bali, for a bilateral meeting. Discussions focused on transnational crime, issues affecting citizens of both countries, immigration cooperation, and border security.

During their visit to Bali, the Cambodian delegation also toured the Denpasar Immigration Office to conduct a comparative study of immigration services.

To prevent the departure of illegal migrant workers, Indonesian immigration authorities have implemented preventive upstream measures, including delaying passport issuance and postponing travel for citizens suspected of attempting non-procedural migration.

Between January and April this year, immigration officers at airports and international seaports across Indonesia intervened in the attempted departure of about 5,000 potential illegal migrant workers.

In addition, immigration offices have reported 303 cases of delayed passport issuance during the same period.
