Bengkulu (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), through its Kepahiang Geophysics Station, confirmed that the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Bengkulu on Friday was caused by deformation activity.

“This earthquake was triggered by intraslab activity or deformation beneath the crust. The tremors were felt across almost the entire Bengkulu Province, with Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) levels ranging from III to VI,” observer Muhammad Najib explained here on Wednesday.

He added that no aftershocks have been recorded following the magnitude 6.0 quake, which occurred at a depth of 84 kilometers below sea level.

Najib urged the public to stay calm, avoid being influenced by hoaxes or misinformation, and always stay alert while relying on credible information sources for updates.

BMKG's Kepahiang Station also plans to collaborate with the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) and other stakeholders to conduct awareness campaigns and improve public understanding of earthquake mitigation.

Meanwhile, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) reported that eight houses in Bengkulu City were severely damaged due to the quake, which struck at 2:53 a.m. local time on Friday.

“We have deployed teams to assess the affected areas, specifically in Betungan Village, at the Rafflesia Griya Asri residential complex. Of the 35 impacted homes, eight were severely damaged,” Head of the Bengkulu Basarnas Office, Muslikun Sodik, stated.

He confirmed that no fatalities were reported after the earthquake. Nevertheless, the Indonesian Military (TNI) and National Police (Polri) personnel have established emergency posts in anticipation of possible aftershocks.

The areas affected by the earthquake include Pagar Dewa and Betungan in Selebar Sub-district, as well as parts of Gading Cempaka, Teluk Segara, and Singaran Pati sub-districts.
