Ngawi (ANTARA) - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, along with Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman, joined farmers in planting superior rice seeds in a village in Ngawi District, East Java Province, on Saturday.

The two leaders participated in the planting activity to gain first-hand insight into how farmers contribute to the government's goal of achieving food self-sufficiency.

During the activity, farmers guided Gibran, who was accompanied by East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Ngawi District Head Ony Anwar Harsono, in planting seeds in a rice field using a modern machine.

Gibran said that, as one of Indonesia’s key food-producing regions, Ngawi plays a crucial role in maintaining national food security.

On that note, he praised the district for its substantial contribution to national rice stocks.

“Thanks to our concerted efforts, Indonesia now holds 3.9 million tons of rice, which is a remarkable achievement in our history. Many countries are asking how Indonesia can achieve a rice surplus while they face shortages,” he said.

During their visit, Gibran and Sulaiman also held a dialogue with local farmers, listened to their complaints, and ensured they have sufficient access to fertilizers, seeds, and reliable irrigation systems.

In addition, the vice president handed over agricultural equipment to farmers, including combine harvesters and tractors, as government assistance.

Meanwhile, Ngawi District Head Harsono told Gibran that the local government has been striving to boost the district’s rice output to support President Prabowo Subianto’s national food self-sufficiency drive.

The district has also been encouraging farmers to use organic fertilizers to promote sustainable agriculture.

After the planting activity, the vice president and his entourage visited a rice mill facility in another village in the district.
