Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has called for making the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) the center of food security and energy security in the region.

While delivering a speech at the 16th BIMP-EAGA Summit in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, he emphasized that food and energy security are important for the independence and sovereignty of the region.

"Therefore, I propose priority on food and energy security. I invite BIMP-EAGA to make our sub-region a regional food production center," he added.

He also underlined the need to strengthen governance and implementation mechanisms for the points of the BIMP-EAGA agreement, followed by strengthening economic integration between countries.

"Including increasing private sector involvement and accelerating infrastructure projects," he added.

Prabowo said he believes that the partnership between Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, and the Philippines -- all members of the BIMP-EAGA sub-regional cooperation -- is beneficial not only for their people, but also for the strength of the region.

He then emphasized that the 16th BIMP-EAGA Summit could strengthen the joint commitment to support and realize the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, agreed upon by the 10 ASEAN member countries in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

The BIMP-EAGA Summit is a high-level meeting held annually by Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, and the Philippines on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit.

Prabowo attended the 46th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur along with other high-level meetings, namely the ASEAN Summit with the Gulf countries (Gulf Cooperation Council) and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.

As part of the agenda of the 46th ASEAN Summit on Monday, he participated in a panel session with nine other leaders of member countries, including Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as the host and chair of ASEAN this year.

On the same day, Prabowo, along with ASEAN leaders, joined the retreat agenda and then attended a meeting between ASEAN and ASEAN parliaments (ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly).

They also met with representatives of ASEAN youth and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC).

Leaders of member countries also jointly signed the ASEAN Declaration 2045: Our Shared Future. The activity ended with a dinner hosted by PM Ibrahim at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center on Monday evening local time.
