Jakarta (ANTARA) -

Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is exploring ways to advance artificial intelligence (AI) development with Prof. Dawn Song from the University of California, Berkeley.

In a statement issued on Friday, Deputy Minister Nezar Patria said the ministry held discussions with Song, a widely recognized and awarded expert in AI and digital security, about progressing national AI initiatives.

“Today’s meeting with Prof. Dawn Song focused on the importance of establishing a network of AI security institutions to ensure the safe and ethical development of AI,” Patria said.

He explained that such a network would provide a collaborative platform for government agencies, academic institutions, civil society, and industry stakeholders.

The discussion also emphasized support for research on AI interpretability, resilience, and risk mitigation.

According to Patria, the network could serve as a hub for critical input, including knowledge exchange on best practices, safety standards, and alignment with global regulations.

“We also encourage responsible AI adoption through capacity building, public engagement, and policy development,” he added.

Achieving these goals requires a shared understanding that AI development must be guided by policies based on empirical research, multidisciplinary expertise, and global best practices.

“The key recommendation for Indonesia is to leverage technical research to establish a regulatory framework focused on AI security, privacy, and accountability,” Patria said.

He also stressed the need for an advisory body composed of AI scientists, ethicists, legal experts, civil organizations, and other specialists.
