Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto hosted the UK Government's International Education Champion, Prof. Sir Steve Smith, in Hambalang, Friday, to discuss cooperation in the education sector between both nations, according to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

The discussion focused on strategic steps to enhance cooperation, especially by strengthening partnerships between Indonesian universities and prominent universities in the United Kingdom.

"Several universities in the United Kingdom are interested in opening their campuses in Indonesia," Wijaya noted in an official broadcast of the Presidential Secretariat.

He then highlighted three key matters discussed by President Prabowo and the British PM's Envoy: increasing cooperation between Indonesian universities and prominent universities in the United Kingdom.

Second, increasing the number of Indonesian students studying at top universities in the UK, either directly in the UK or at future branch campuses in Indonesia.

He detailed that the third aspect pertained to fostering research collaboration between researchers and professors from Indonesian and British universities.

"(This includes) increasing collaboration between researchers and professors in Indonesia and the UK, especially on the downstreaming of 28 priority natural resources in Indonesia, as outlined by Astacita," Wijaya explained.

During the meeting, the British entourage comprised Prof. Sir Steve Smith, the British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, and representatives of the Russell Group — a network of 24 of the best universities in the UK.

"Also present at the meeting were Prof. Helen Bailey from Queen Mary University of London, Prof. Funmi Olonisakin from King's College London, Prof. Tariq Ali from the University of Liverpool, and the British Council Country Director for Indonesia, Mr. Summer Xia," Wijaya remarked.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo was accompanied by Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Prof. Brian Yuliarto; Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto; Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi; and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
