Siti Nadia Tarmizi, Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases, said on Monday that the Ministry of Health is preparing technical guidelines in coordination with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.
These guidelines will serve as a derivative regulation of Government Regulation (PP) No. 28 of 2024, which implements Law No. 17 of 2023 on Health.
"We will have technical regulations to manage influencer involvement in promoting electronic cigarettes on social media," she said during a webinar held in observance of World No Tobacco Day.
Tarmizi added that the Ministry of Health is harmonizing the regulation with other ministries and agencies, and aims to complete it within the year.
The ministry used this year’s World No Tobacco Day, observed on May 31, to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco and electronic cigarette products.
This year’s theme, "Revealing the Misleading Appeal of Tobacco and Nicotine Products," aligns with the World Health Organization’s global theme, "Unmasking the Appeal."
Tarmizi explained that the theme seeks to expose tactics used by the tobacco industry to make harmful products, especially electronic cigarettes, appear more attractive to young people.
She affirmed that the Indonesian government supports the WHO’s global tobacco control strategy, known as MPOWER: Monitor, Protect, Offer, Warn, Enforce, and Raise.
