Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia should learn from Chile’s experience in completing its accession process to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in a relatively short period, according to Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.

The minister made this statement following a bilateral meeting with Chile’s Vice Minister of Trade Claudia Sanhueza during the 2025 OECD Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM) in Paris on Tuesday (June 3).

“Chile’s experience in completing the accession process within a short time can be an important reference for Indonesia,” he noted in a statement received here on Wednesday.

Chile’s accession to the OECD took around two years, starting in 2007 and culminating in full membership on May 15, 2010.

Meanwhile, Indonesia submitted its Initial Memorandum (IM) within less than a year after receiving the Accession Roadmap from the OECD in February 2024.

The document reflects Indonesia’s strong commitment to aligning with OECD standards and principles, with the aim of completing the accession process within three years.

Additionally, Indonesia commended Chile’s commitment to supporting Indo-Pacific cooperation and strengthening regional economic integration.

During the meeting, Minister Hartarto also reiterated Indonesia’s intention to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), as part of the country’s economic transformation.

Indonesia officially submitted its questionnaire to the New Zealand government, the CPTPP depository country, on May 12, 2025, and is targeting full membership by 2027.

“Indonesia also hopes for Chile’s support in forming the Accession Working Group within the CPTPP Commission and expressed appreciation for the support provided so far,” he stated.

Besides discussing the OECD, Hartarto and Sanhueza also discussed the enhancement of the Indonesia-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IC-CEPA), which saw trade volume nearly double from 2020 to 2024, reaching US$473 million in 2024.

The two countries launched negotiations for an investment agreement under the IC-CEPA framework on June 13, 2024.

Moreover, Indonesia expressed its support for Chile’s plan to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
