Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Trade Dyah Roro Esti met with the United Kingdom's Trade Envoy to Indonesia and ASEAN, Naz Shah, to discuss bolstering bilateral trade cooperation.

The meeting was a strategic opportunity to strengthen Indonesia-UK trade ties amidst global dynamics, including US tariff policies.

"The United Kingdom is an important partner for Indonesia in both trade and investment. We welcome the progress made in our cooperation and will continue to push for mutually beneficial trade relations," Esti said in a statement received Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

She noted the discussion covered key economic and trade issues, particularly the US's protectionist trade policy and its potential impact on businesses in both nations.

Esti reaffirmed Indonesia's non-aligned stance, maintaining good relations with all trading partners and prioritizing dialogue.

Indonesia also emphasized ASEAN centrality amidst global uncertainty and its openness to expanding market access, including with the UK.

The UK is seen as a strategic partner with strong potential to broaden cooperation in goods, services, and investment, especially through the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO).

They also discussed deeper collaboration in critical minerals, green energy, human resources development, and MSME empowerment.

Naz Shah reiterated the UK's commitment to strengthening economic and trade relations with Indonesia by fostering a more inclusive and mutually beneficial trade climate.

In 2024, total trade between Indonesia and the UK reached US$2.7 billion, with Indonesian exports at US$1.8 billion and imports from the UK at US$0.9 billion.
