"This is not only a technical collaboration but also reaffirmation that sports is part of Indonesia's diplomacy strategy that is strengthened for international solidarity," he said in a written statement in Jakarta on Saturday.
Minister Ariotedjo recently represented Indonesia at a ministerial meeting where a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed to formalize cooperation within the BRICS Sports Group.
He noted that multilateral collaboration is essential to building an inclusive sports ecosystem that upholds integrity and promotes shared progress.
Indonesia's participation in the BRICS Sports Group is an important milestone that marks a new chapter for Indonesia's leadership in international sports cooperation.
Indonesia and the BRICS countries have agreed to hold a joint sports event, the BRICS Games, and encourage exchanges of athletes, coaches, and sports experts.
The group also agreed to advance sports science, develop human resource capacity, and implement anti-doping education initiatives, including the exchange of research and best practices.
The cooperation aims to preserve and promote traditional sports as part of global cultural heritage while expanding recognition for non-Olympic sports at the international level.
The MoU also includes commitments to promote social integration through sports, and to organize seminars, congresses, and workshops focused on strategies for implementing sports policies.
In addition, the BRICS nations committed to strengthening bilateral ties within the group’s framework to improve networking, efficiency, and inclusive participation.
Minister Ariotedjo emphasized the importance of collaboration to address global challenges, including the issue of athletes' mental health, digital transformation in sports, and strengthening the youth's role through sports diplomacy.
As a new BRICS member since January 2025, Indonesia expressed its readiness to contribute actively to the group’s strategic initiatives going forward.
“This is a valuable opportunity for Indonesia to bring its unique spirit to the global arena -- not just in achievements, but in values of unity, fair play, and innovation,” he concluded.
