Jakarta (ANTARA) - The mining sector is playing a critical role in supporting the transition to eco-friendly energy sources, according to an official from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.

At the Indonesia Miner Conference & Exhibition 2025 in Jakarta on Tuesday, the ministry's assistant deputy for mineral and coal development, Herry Permana, said that minerals extracted through mining are essential for producing goods and equipment that support the energy transition.

"This is about the provision of critical raw materials, including rare earth minerals and coal," he added, noting that these commodities are vital for manufacturing renewable energy technologies, such as electric vehicles, solar panels, and wind turbines.

Permana stressed that the use of these materials to support clean energy and ensure national energy security is aligned with President Prabowo Subianto's eight main missions, or the Asta Cita.

Beyond contributing to the energy transition, he said, the mining sector could also play a major role in helping Indonesia achieve its target of 8 percent economic growth by 2028–2029.

"This sector contributes directly by increasing non-tax state revenue, export earnings, investment, and job creation, and indirectly by supporting infrastructure development, local economies, and human resource quality improvements," he explained.

He also underscored the importance of collaboration and prudence among all relevant stakeholders to fully harness the environmental and economic potential of the mining industry.

"It is necessary to formulate and implement comprehensive policies and strategies that cover the entire mining ecosystem, from upstream to downstream, ensuring effective, efficient, transparent, fair, and secure supply chains," he said.

He also reminded both the government and the public of the need to ensure that all mining activities remain aligned with the principles of environmental sustainability.
