Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy chairperson for downstreaming at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Tony Wenas, has underlined the importance of responding carefully to any new tariff policies that are announced after the United States-China trade talks.

"The tariff policy needs to be reviewed as much as possible, especially several offers and other potential cooperation that can be carried out between the United States and Indonesia," Wenas said here on Tuesday.

Wenas, who is also the president director of PT Freeport Indonesia, said that any new policies that evolve out of the US-China meeting would have an impact on several strategic sectors such as mining.

"If the policy is implemented, it will have an impact on the mining sector, both in China and Indonesia, including for its derivative products," he added.

"For example, copper that is sold a lot to China, then China exports it to the US, then the tariffs will be high and this will affect the market. So, no matter how small the changes that may be implemented, it will affect the market," he explained.

White House National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett said earlier on Monday that US and Chinese officials were meeting in London to discuss trade issues.

According to a Bloomberg report, the negotiations were expected to continue until Monday night or even Tuesday (June 10, 2025).

"The purpose of today's meeting is to make sure they're serious — get approval from our three key trade negotiators (Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer), and we can get this done," Hassett told CNBC.

Washington expects that once the talks are over and the trade restrictions issue is resolved, the two sides will "get back to discussing more detailed matters," Hassett, who is also an economic adviser, said.

Earlier on June 6, US President Donald Trump said that Bessent, Lutnick, and Greer will meet with a Chinese delegation in London on June 9 to resolve the trade dispute between the two countries.

On June 7, China's Commerce Ministry announced its readiness to strengthen dialogue with other countries regarding controls on exports of rare earth elements.
