Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Health Ministry is set to launch the Presidential Call to End Malaria Initiative (PCMI) by inviting all stakeholders—central and regional governments, the community, and mass media—to strengthen collaboration to expedite malaria elimination.

During a media briefing on Thursday, Director of Infectious Diseases at the ministry Ina Agustina Isturini said the PCMI will be launched at the Asia Pacific Leaders’ Summit on Malaria Elimination, scheduled on June 16 and 17, 2025, in Bali.

“The PCMI is a call to action on collaboration to eliminate malaria,” she added.

In Indonesia, the PCMI will be followed up with a national action plan to secure cross-ministerial, institutional, and regional collaboration as well as cross-sectoral cooperation involving academics, businesses, and the mass media, she informed.

“We need to work together, filling the gaps together, both from the central and regional governments, then from academics, from the business world and the media as well,” she said.

According to Isturini, a joint movement to eradicate malaria is necessary, considering that in 2023, Indonesia was among the top five countries with the most malaria cases at 1.09 million.

On the same occasion, Head of the ministry’s Center for Global Health Strategy and Governance Policy Harditya Suryawanto said that the PCMI has received support from several ministries/institutions.

“We have discussed this national initiative at the ministerial and institutional levels, and they support it. We need to increase synergy between ministries and institutions in eradicating malaria at the national level,” Suryawanto emphasized.

The Asia Pacific Leaders’ Summit on Malaria Elimination is a regional platform that aims to accelerate efforts to eliminate malaria in the Asia Pacific region by 2030.

Suryawanto said that seven health ministers from the region, namely from Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Vanuatu, Solomon, Laos, Papua New Guinea, and Pakistan, have confirmed their attendance at the summit.

Indonesia, in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA), will host the 9th meeting in Bali.
