Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to sustainable ocean management at the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC-3) at Port Lympia, Nice, France.

“Indonesia is committed to marine protection and sustainable blue economic development,” Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono stated at the event, according to a statement from here on Friday.

Speaking at the conference held on June 9-13, Trenggono emphasized the urgent need for global cooperation to address challenges such as ocean warming, rising ocean acidification, declining fish stocks, and pollution.

“Indonesia continues to demonstrate its leadership through concrete actions in blue economy policies aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” he stated.

Indonesia implements blue economy concrete actions, such as expanding marine conservation areas to cover 30 percent by 2045, implementing responsible quota-based fisheries, promoting sustainable aquaculture, monitoring coastal ecosystems, and involving communities in reducing plastic waste in seas.

Currently, Indonesia protects over 29 million hectares of marine areas and ranks among the countries with the largest blue carbon reserves globally, storing about 17 percent of the world’s blue carbon from mangroves and seagrass.

Furthermore, Indonesia is pushing for stronger global cooperation in capacity building, open science, marine research, and technology transfer.

Indonesia also pioneered innovative financing mechanisms such as the Indonesia Coral Reef Bond and the Global Blended Finance Alliance, along with the Ocean 20 initiative launched during its G20 Presidency.

Furthermore, Indonesia has ratified the International Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) and joined the Aquatic Blue Food Coalition alongside 40 other countries.

As proof of Indonesia’s leadership in sustainable ocean governance, Minister Trenggono announced that Indonesia will host the Ocean Impact Summit to celebrate World Ocean Day in 2026.
