The conversation, which lasted nearly 15 minutes, included an exchange of greetings and updates on the current developments in both countries.
“The two leaders asked about each other's well-being and shared updates on recent developments in both the United States and Indonesia,” Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya noted in a statement on Friday.
Prabowo extended his congratulations to Trump on his victory in the 2024 US Presidential Election.
In return, President Trump congratulated President Prabowo on his election as Indonesia's 8th President.
During the phone call, both leaders discussed bilateral ties and agreed to further strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and the United States.
“As leaders of two great nations, both expressed their commitment to improving bilateral relations and reaffirmed their support for maintaining global peace and stability,” Wijaya remarked.
The two last spoke by phone in November 2024 when President Prabowo visited the United States to meet then-President Joe Biden.
During that visit, Prabowo called Trump to congratulate him on his election victory. That brief phone call lasted 2 minutes and 50 seconds, during which President Prabowo expressed interest in meeting Trump in person.
President Trump, in turn, praised Prabowo's leadership and expressed his intention to visit Indonesia.
Indonesia and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1949, and this year marks the 76th anniversary of their bilateral ties.
The two countries maintain strong cooperation across various sectors, such as economy, trade, education, culture, and defense.
However, the US government has imposed a reciprocal import tariff of 32 percent on Indonesia, in addition to a baseline 10 percent tariff applied to all countries.
President Prabowo has sent a delegation to the US to negotiate the import tariff rates. The team is led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.
