Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - The cross-country expansion of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) payment system to China and Japan will help bolster tourism in Bali Island, according to a Bank Indonesia (BI) official.

"Bali is a tourism icon. With digitalisation, the quality of Bali tourism will increase," Deputy of BI Representative Office in Bali, Butet Linda Helena Pandjaitan, stated on Sunday.

Enabling QRIS access to the two countries will greatly help Chinese and Japanese tourists in Bali, as they no longer need to exchange physical banknotes to pay, the BI official said.

"Simply by scanning the QR code through their platform connected to QRIS, they can promptly pay," she said, adding that the digital transaction can be performed even when they use the home currency in their bank account.

Pandjaitan is optimistic the QRIS advancement will help more local MSMEs to thrive, as the central bank recorded that 96 per cent of QRIS users are MSMEs.

She also highlighted that the earlier QRIS access rollout for Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia had been warmly welcomed by tourists from the three countries since they could "use their platform to pay with no need to exchange banknotes."

Last month, Bank Indonesia announced that the QRIS payment method will become available in Japan and China from August 17, 2025.

The Bank Indonesia Office in Bali recorded over 39 million QRIS transactions, valued at Rp5.99 trillion, by over 974 thousand merchants and 1.1 million users throughout the province for the January-April 2025 period.

Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia has recorded 1.17 million cross-country QRIS transactions valued at Rp288.4 billion nationally in the same period.
