Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Social Affairs is refining the concept of Sekolah Rakyat, a residential educational institution that provides round-the-clock support for children from underprivileged families, focusing on character, nutrition, and comprehensive social interaction.

Vice Minister of Social Affairs Agus Jabo Priyono explained that the education system at Sekolah Rakyat integrates formal learning activities with character education, life skills, and intensive psychosocial support.

"Sekolah Rakyat operates 24 hours a day. There are caregivers and mentors, and all elements play a role. It is not just about providing knowledge but also building self-confidence, improving nutrition, and healing emotional wounds," he stated after closing the first phase of the Sekolah Rakyat principal retreat at the Headquarters of the 1/Faletehan Air Defense Artillery Regiment in Jakarta on Friday.

He explained that formal learning activities at Sekolah Rakyat will take place from morning until afternoon, with a formal curriculum, while afternoons and evenings will be dedicated to extracurricular activities and structured character-building sessions.

This educational system will be developed by the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, and the Sekolah Rakyat Program Formulation Team, with an inclusive approach that addresses the backgrounds of children with limited access to education.

"The students will come from poor families, and their backgrounds are full of challenges. Therefore, the principal must be ready to listen, understand, and address those issues," he emphasized.

Agus further explained that education at Sekolah Rakyat will focus on three main areas: knowledge, national, religious, and social character building, and life skills. Teachers will also participate in special retreats, just like the principals.

According to the vice minister, this concept aims not only to break the cycle of poverty but also to develop well-rounded Indonesian citizens who are educated, possess strong character, and are capable of being independent in facing the future.

"We will collaborate with anyone who has the capacity to help prepare future principals and teachers. Teachers will also be equipped with character training," he concluded.
