Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is finalizing a plan for cooperation with Russia in developing nuclear power plant through the construction of the small modular reactors (SMRs) with a 500MW capacity.

“For nuclear (power plant development), we will first conduct a feasibility study,” Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said in St. Petersburg, Russia, Friday.

This study is an initial step to prepare the technological and regulatory foundations to support the development of safe and sustainable nuclear energy, he added.

The Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry revealed the government’s plan to build a nuclear power plant, with potential sites identified in Sumatra and Kalimantan.

It is planning to develop 250 megawatt (MW) of nuclear power plant capacity in Sumatra, and the remaining 250MW in Kalimantan.

The construction of the NPP is part of the government’s commitment to increase new and renewable energy utilization.

In the plan, SMRs are considered more efficient and flexible when compared to conventional nuclear power plants.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his country's readiness to cooperate with Indonesia in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

This cooperation covers various sectors such as health, agriculture and human resource training.

This statement was delivered in a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Moscow, Thursday (June 19), which also discussed strengthening strategic partnerships in the energy sector, including renewable energy and nuclear technology.

Russia, with its experience and advanced nuclear technology, is a potential partner in supporting Indonesia's efforts to achieve a clean energy mix and gradual carbon emission reduction.
