St. Petersburg (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has expressed appreciation to the Russian Government for supporting Indonesia's membership in BRICS, an intergovernmental organization believed to be able to contribute significantly to global stability and prosperity.

"We thank the Government of Russia for promptly supporting us to become a member of BRICS," Subianto noted in his speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025 in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Friday.

The president highlighted that Indonesia continues to play an active role in international relations. Besides BRICS, Indonesia was also accepted as a member of the New Development Bank (NDB) in a relatively short time.

On that occasion, he also expressed gratitude to the Governments of China and South Africa for supporting Indonesia's BRICS membership bid, as well as NDB President Dilma Vana Rousseff for supporting Indonesia's inclusion in the NDB.

"We believe that together, BRICS can contribute significantly to the stability and prosperity of the world," he remarked.

Indonesia officially became a member of BRICS in January 2025, joining Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

Indonesia also announced its membership in the NDB on March 25, 2025. The NDB is a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS countries to finance infrastructure projects and promote sustainable development in developing countries.

The NBD focuses on infrastructure development and poverty alleviation through programs that support industrialization, which can create jobs.

President Prabowo attended the SPIEF 2025 at the invitation of President Putin. He wrapped up his visit to St. Petersburg on June 18–20 by participating in the event.

Earlier, on Thursday, President Prabowo met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Konstantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg, where the two leaders witnessed the exchange of four agreement documents between Indonesia and Russia.
