Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Culture has urged Indonesian business players and regional governments to collaborate in establishing museums to provide education to youth and support their character building.

“Regional governments are also encouraged to establish (museums), at least one museum per regional government,” director general of protection of culture and tradition at the Ministry of Culture, Restu Gunawan, said in Tangerang, Banten, on Saturday.

According to Gunawan, museums can also serve as educational tourist destinations, especially for students during the school holiday period.

He further said that museums can convey information to the youth about the richness of Indonesian culture.

In addition, the government has a special fund to support the physical building of museums.

He also urged the public to change their mindsets and be aware that Indonesian culture has economic value if it can be developed optimally, including through festivals.

Meanwhile, head of the Tangerang City Culture and Tourism Office, Boyke Urif Hermawan, underscored Tangerang city’s important cultural role.

This, he said, is evident from several historical sites in the city, such as the Boen Tek Bio Temple and the Kalipasir Mosque.

According to data from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the number of museums across Indonesia stands at 442. Jakarta and Central Java provinces have the highest number of museums, at 63 each.
