Head of the Hajj Media Center (MCH) for the Makkah Working Area, Dodo Murtado, stated during an online press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday that the pilgrims come from diverse demographic backgrounds, in terms of education, occupation, gender, age, and health status.
According to data from the Integrated Hajj Information and Computerization System (Siskohat), Indonesian pilgrims are mostly female, numbering 112,838, or 55.54 percent, while male pilgrims total 90,311, or 44.46 percent.
“In terms of age, there are 44,085 elderly pilgrims aged 65 and above, including 21,176 men and 22,909 women,” Murtado remarked.
Murtado explained that 56 percent of elderly pilgrims, or 24,598 people, are within the 65–70 age range. Another 4,936 pilgrims are aged 81–90, and 297 are over 90 years old. Meanwhile, the oldest pilgrim this year is 108 years old, while the youngest is 17.
“In terms of education, most Indonesian pilgrims this year have only completed elementary school, totaling 56,833 people, followed by 52,796 who have finished high school education,” he stated.
Additionally, 50,266 pilgrims hold a bachelor’s degree, 10,126 have completed junior high school, and the rest have other educational backgrounds, such as diploma holders and those with master's or doctoral graduates.
Housewives make up the largest occupational group among the pilgrims, totaling 54,927 participants, followed by private sector employees with 44,421 and civil servants with 39,580.
“There are 472 pilgrims with disabilities this year. Among them, 303 people, or 64.19 percent, have leg disabilities, 102 have arm disabilities, and 67, or 14.19 percent, with both arm and leg disabilities,” he explained.
In addition, 199,769 pilgrims, or 98.34 percent, are performing Hajj for the first time.
Murtado noted that the diverse profile of this year’s Hajj pilgrims highlights the immense challenges and complexities faced by Indonesian Hajj officers in providing optimal service.
“We once again remind all Indonesian pilgrims still in the Holy Land to take good care of their health,” he added.
