During a visit to Medan Class I Prison, North Sumatra, on Wednesday, he said that President Prabowo Subianto has directed the construction of such a correctional facility.
“The President has a plan for the development of a modern correctional facility with supermaximum security, to be situated on a remote island. Its preparations are currently ongoing,” Andrianto said, according to a statement released by the ministry.
During his visit to Medan Prison, the minister had lunch with the inmates to demonstrate “a form of care and attention to those currently undergoing rehabilitation.”
“We are all honorable individuals. In the eyes of God, we are all equals. The only difference is that you are undergoing a period of reflection within this facility to become better,” he said.
The minister also inspected the prison’s job skill development and activity center.
Earlier, the Ministry of Immigration and Correction transferred nearly one thousand high-risk inmates from various Indonesian regions to the Nusakambangan Supermaximum Security Prison.
In a separate statement, Minister Andrianto said that the redistribution of inmates is not merely a physical relocation but a strategic move to protect other inmates from drug exposure and other harmful influences.
At the same time, he informed, the redistribution is also aimed at preventing high-risk inmates from continuing with behaviors that endanger both themselves and others.
“This is about safeguarding the integrity of our correctional system, which upholds a noble purpose,” he added.
