Jakarta (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar has called on Indonesian Muslims to observe the 1447 Islamic New Year as an opportunity for comprehensive self-reflection and improvement, covering spiritual, intellectual, and social aspects.

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar starts with the month of Muharram and was established in 622 CE to commemorate the Hijrah, or the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina.

Speaking at a Hijri New Year national commemoration event at Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on Thursday night (June 26), Umar emphasized that the Hijrah was not merely a physical journey but a major turning point that symbolized the transition from darkness to enlightenment.

"What is the point of celebrating Muharram if our quality as individuals declines?" he asked the audience, as cited from an official statement on Friday.

Umar stated that the decision by the Prophet’s companions to begin the Islamic calendar with Hijrah highlights its profound significance for Muslims around the world.

He then highlighted the relevance of the Hijrah in modern life, calling the historic journey a timeless reminder for Muslims to always pursue betterment.

"The Hijrah signifies leaving behind all negative things," he remarked.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti, who also spoke at the event, shared a similar view.

"The Hijrah inspires us to avoid despicable actions and pursue a life of virtue," he stated.

Addressing the social aspect of Hijrah, Mu’ti urged the public to fight for social justice by rejecting corruption and unethical practices.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs organized the Islamic New Year commemorative event as part of its Peaceful Muharram 1447 H program.

The celebrations drew participation from several ministers, ambassadors of various countries, leaders of Islamic organizations, Religious Affairs Ministry's officials, and residents.
