Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has proposed a second-best offer to the United States in an effort to negotiate on reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said.

Ahead of the July 8 tariff negotiation deadline, Hartarto told journalists at the Presidential Palace here Friday that the US government's proposals for tariffs and trade barriers have been approved by the Indonesian government.

"For the tariff negotiations, we have proposed Indonesia's second-best offer. And we have fulfilled several US requests regarding tariffs, non-tariff barriers, and commercial matters," he said, adding that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has expressed willingness to accommodate a number of Indonesian offers.

The US government will then coordinate with the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the US Department of Commerce, and US Department of the Treasury to respond to the Indonesian offer, he said.

"Every day, there are changes during negotiation because other countries propose something different from what Indonesia proposes or vice versa. They (will) ask 'why doesn't Indonesia propose something the same as what other countries propose or vice versa," he stated.

As earlier reported, the deadline for tariff negotiations falls on July 8, or 90 days after US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of reciprocal tariffs on the country's main trading partner countries in early April 2025.

On a previous occasion, Hartarto said that the US government's main request when imposing a 32 percent reciprocal tariff on Indonesia was considered limited to balancing the trade balance between the two countries.
