Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA) - The Ministry for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) has opened a migrant center at Padang State University (UNP), Padang city, West Sumatra, to help university graduates find jobs overseas.

“After the inauguration of the migrant center at Diponegoro University (Central Java), the P2MI Ministry has launched the first migrant center in West Sumatra,” the ministry’s director general of promotion and utilization of overseas work opportunities, Dwi Setiawan Susanto, said in Padang on Saturday.

The UNP Migrant Center is an integrated service point that will provide comprehensive and accurate information about employment procedures and work opportunities overseas, he informed.

The center will offer information that is safe, legal, and in line with applicable regulations to UNP graduates looking to find work abroad and other prospective migrant workers (PMIs), he added.

The migrant center was set up to prevent fraudulent practices or human trafficking.

The ministry expects the migrant center to become the main reference for job seekers in finding work abroad safely and professionally.

Currently, the P2MI Ministry has reached out to 100 countries to explore job opportunities for PMIs. This means that graduates, especially vocational graduates, have a good opportunity to work in many countries.

Susanto informed that 2,873 PMIs from West Sumatra have found work in several sectors, ranging from manufacturing, agriculture, construction, health, hospitality, and plantations, as of June 2025.

“West Sumatran PMIs are well known for their expertise and knowledge. They are spread across Malaysia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Taiwan,” he noted.

In the future, the ministry will encourage and invite university graduates to work in countries such as Europe and the United States. It will particularly focus on countries that offer good legal protection.

Earlier on Thursday, P2MI Minister Abdul Kadir Karding said that the establishment of migrant centers is intended to prevent human traffickers from targeting university graduates by promising high salaries.

“The victims of human trafficking lured by high salaries and unverified jobs are mostly university graduates,” he disclosed.

According to Karding, the migrant center at Diponegoro University was established after victims of human trafficking were found to be dominated by university graduates.
