Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Integrated EV Battery Industry Ecosystem on Sunday, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced that the factory could supply batteries for up to 300,000 electric cars.
He also projected that future demand, including for solar power systems, could push the factory’s output to 40 GWh.
The EV battery ecosystem is a strategic collaboration led by state-owned ANTAM, Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), and a consortium including CATL, Brunp, and Lygend (CBL).
Of its six sub-projects, five are located in East Halmahera, North Maluku, and one in Karawang.
The Karawang facility spans 43 hectares and is managed by PT Contemporary Amperex Technology Indonesia Battery (CATIB), a joint venture between IBC and CBL, a subsidiary of global battery leader CATL.
The factory's first-phase production is set at 6.9 GWh, with full operations expected by the end of 2026.
