Karawang, Jawa Barat (ANTARA) - Pertamina NRE, a subsidiary of Indonesia’s state-owned energy company Pertamina, has shown interest in participating in the development of nuclear power plants (NPPs) in the country.

The plan was revealed by Pertamina NRE CEO John Anis after attending the groundbreaking ceremony for an electric vehicle battery project in Karawang, West Java, on Sunday, June 29.

“We always want to contribute,” Anis remarked, highlighting the company’s ambition to be involved in Indonesia’s nuclear energy development.

He noted that the government aims to construct several nuclear plants, with a total capacity of 500 megawatts (MW) by 2034. As a company focused on new and renewable energy, Pertamina NRE is eager to support this initiative.

“It is up to the government whether we will join a consortium with PLN and other parties,” he noted, referring to the state-owned electricity company.

While the government prepares regulations for nuclear power development, Pertamina NRE is conducting its studies on technology, location, and energy sources.

“The government is working on the regulations, and we are exploring the technology,” Anis explained.

He remarked that Pertamina NRE plans to study nuclear energy development in countries such as Russia, China, Canada, Switzerland, and the United States.

Earlier, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed that a roadmap for nuclear development has been drafted, targeting a total capacity of 500 MW by 2034, with 250 MW of it to be built in Sumatra and the remainder in Kalimantan.

Indonesia intends to utilize small modular reactor (SMR) technology for its nuclear program.

According to PLN's 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), West Kalimantan holds significant energy resources, including over 24 thousand tons of uranium—the key fuel for nuclear reactors.

However, Anis emphasized that the implementation of nuclear power still depends on future government policies and the results of feasibility studies.

Pertamina NRE was established to help Indonesia reduce carbon emissions and transition to low-carbon energy technologies.
