“We see great potential in opening this sea route for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims. We have discussed this matter with the Saudi Arabian authority,” Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar informed on Tuesday.
If supporting infrastructure such as ports and sea transportation facilities is available, the sea route would be a more affordable option for Umrah and Hajj pilgrims, he said.
According to the minister, the option would allow pilgrims from countries in the Asian region, including Indonesia, to access the Holy Land through ports such as Jeddah, without relying solely on flights.
“Through this sea route, access to the Holy Land will not only be available for nearby countries such as Egypt, but also for Indonesia and other Asian countries,” he said.
He noted that the initiative would not only offer a new option for the community, but also provide added value for Saudi Arabia.
Moreover, Saudi Arabia has adopted a new approach to realize various innovations and strategic investments, he said.
“Saudi Arabia’s approach is now very business-like, with consultants from the United States. This opportunity can utilize Saudi Arabia’s geographical potential,” he pointed out.
In addition, Umar outlined Saudi Arabia’s plan to modernize worship facilities, such as constructing eight-story Hajj building for the accommodation of pilgrims in the Mina valley and widening the Mataf area.
“ The Saudi Arabian government will also add flyovers. All to improve pilgrimage services,” he informed.
He then expressed the hope that the new system will open more inclusive access to Hajj and Umrah for people from all levels of society, both rich and poor.
