Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Transportation is collaborating with interdisciplinary experts to seek strategic solutions to various land transportation issues, aiming to enhance safety, efficiency, and service for the community.

The ministry's Director General of Land Transportation, Aan Suhanan, noted in a written statement received here on Wednesday that the contribution of experts is crucial in formulating effective solutions to various challenges in land transportation.

He emphasized that addressing issues related to land transportation safety and smooth traffic flow is vital, as these problems can result in significant losses.

In this regard, feedback from the transportation community is considered important to strengthen the role of land transportation in sustainably supporting economic, social, and cultural activities across Indonesia.

Data from the Traffic Corps of the National Police shows that traffic accidents in Indonesia remain relatively high, with a fatality rate of three people per hour, highlighting the urgent need to thoroughly improve land transportation safety.

Meanwhile, only 20 percent of Indonesians use public transportation, and traffic congestion causes state losses of approximately Rp65 trillion (around US$4 billion). He noted that this illustrates the complexity of the current land transportation challenges.

The ministry and experts have also discussed efforts to increase the use of mass transportation, address the issue of over-dimension and over-load (ODOL) vehicles, and regulate online transportation and special rental services.

Suhanan expressed optimism that the road map and action plan developed will help improve systems and regulations to gradually tackle the issues of ODOL vehicles.

Deputy Chair of Regional Empowerment and Development of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI), Djoko Setijowarno, encouraged the Directorate General of Land Transportation to prioritize improving public transportation and enhancing the regional governments' role in policy implementation.

Experts have also recommended addressing the ODOL vehicle issue, promoting alternative transportation modes, and strengthening online transportation governance.
