"This tree planting is also in commemoration of World Environment Day," Bukhari, Head of the West Aceh Environment and Sanitation Agency, stated on Wednesday.
He remarked that the one thousand ketapang and pine trees planted along Batee Puteh Beach in Meulaboh will be cared for until they reach maturity.
This effort will help keep the coastal area cool and protect it from coastal erosion, which has become a growing concern for the community.
"God willing, we estimate that in about three years' time, the trees we planted will be mature," he remarked.
Acting Regional Secretary of West Aceh District, Wishta Nowar, stated that World Environment Day should not just be a ceremony but must be celebrated in everyday life activities.
Nowar remarked that for the first time, the West Aceh district government has included environmental issues in its official development planning documents, both for the medium-term and annually.
It demonstrates the regional government's commitment to preserving the environment within the community, Nowar said.
