As per Presidential Instruction Number 6 of 2025, Bulog’s rice absorption target for 2025 was 3 million tons. This has now been increased to 4 million tons.
“Throughout the year, there is no El Nino; there is rain throughout the year. Thus, our rice reserves must be increased from 3 million tons to 4 million tons,” Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, said at his ministry’s office in Jakarta on Thursday.
In addition to bolstering rice reserves, the target has been raised to maintain paddy prices and prevent them from sliding further.
On the same occasion, Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Arief Prasetyo Adi, said that the additional target was initially proposed by Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman.
While Sulaiman had proposed increasing the rice absorption target for Bulog by up to 1.5 million tons, Coordinating Minister Hasan agreed to push up the target by 1 million tons.
Presidential Instruction Number 6 of 2025 will be updated to incorporate the new target.
Bulog’s budget is also projected to increase to accommodate the planned purchase of 1 million tons of rice at a price of Rp12 thousand (around US$0.74) per kilogram.
Adi assured that Bulog’s warehouses are ready to store the additional government rice reserves because the Bapanas is currently also actively distributing rice, including the 10-kilogram rice assistance to 18.27 million beneficiaries.
