Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - The Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) has temporarily closed the hiking trail passing through the Pelawangan Sembalun route to Segara Anak Lake on Mount Rinjani, Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara.

TNGR Head Yarman stated that the closure began on July 16, 2025, and will last until further notice.

"Ticket reservations made via the e-Rinjani application and hiking activities to and from the Pelawangan Sembalun trail to Segara Anak Lake are temporarily closed," he noted in a statement on Friday.

He remarked that this measure aims to improve natural tourism facilities and promote sustainable conservation area management in Mount Rinjani National Park.

Yarman also noted that the temporarily closed hiking trail had a history of accidents involving foreign tourists.

"Visitors with valid entry tickets can proceed with their hike according to the time stated on their tickets," he remarked.

Alternative routes available to tourists are via Senaru - Pelawangan Senaru - Segara Anak Lake - Torean; and Sembalun - Pelawangan Sembalun - Mount Rinjani Peak.

Yarman emphasized that visitor safety remains the top priority in managing the Mount Rinjani National Park area.

On July 16-17, 2025, two foreign tourists were involved in an accident while hiking along the Pelawangan Sembalun Trail to Segara Anak Lake on Mount Rinjani.

The Swiss tourist, Beneditk Emmenegger, was involved in an accident on July 16, 2025. The incident was estimated to have occurred approximately 25 minutes before reaching the Iron Bridge leading to Segara Anak Lake.

On the following day, Dutch tourist Sarah Tamar van Hulten also suffered a fall while hiking on Mount Rinjani on the Pelawangan Sembalun Trail to Segara Anak Lake.

The search and rescue operation for the two foreign tourists involved various agencies, including the Mataram Search and Rescue Office, the Bali Search and Rescue Office, the TNGR Center, hospitals, volunteers, and tour guides.
