Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, described the creative economy as the new driver of national development at National Congress I of the National Creative Economy Movement (GEKRAFS) in Jakarta on Saturday.

According to Umar, the creative economy is a “new engine of growth” that integrates culture, innovation, and economy in the framework of sustainable development.

She said that this was evident from the spirit of collaboration demonstrated at the congress, held as part of a series of events marking the run-up to the nation’s first National Creative Economy Day on October 24, which will make Indonesia the first country in the world to have a national day dedicated to the creative economy.

“National Creative Economy Day is not a ceremony. It is a symbol of recognition and a strategy to make creativity the new face of Indonesia’s economy,” Umar added.

Meanwhile, GEKRAFS chairperson Kawendra Lukistian stressed the importance of literacy, an inclusive ecosystem, and practical policies, especially for creative economy players in regions outside major cities.

He described the younger generation as the future backbone of the sector.

On the same occasion, Culture Minister Fadli Zon said that creativity and culture are national strengths that must be developed jointly to bring global attention to Indonesia’s rich heritage.

Meanwhile, State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir underlined that the creative economy and digital economy are key pillars for achieving the target of 7 to 8 percent economic growth.

Saturday’s congress emphasized that the creative economy movement is more than just a community movement—it is a sustainable development strategy that can harness the potential of technology, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and diplomacy for nation branding.
