Ternate, North Maluku (ANTARA) - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera District, North Maluku, erupted on Monday, spewing volcanic ash up to 1,200 meters above the peak, as reported by the Dukono Volcano Observation Post (PGA).

"The eruption sent a column of volcanic ash 1,200 meters high on Monday," Bambang Sugiono, an officer at Dukono PGA, noted in a statement on Monday (July 21).

He reported that Mount Dukono emitted a thick column of white to gray ash, which was observed drifting east.

Sugiono remarked that the eruption of the volcano, which stands 1,087 meters above sea level, was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 26 mm and a duration of 78.71 seconds, as monitored from the Dukono PGA Post in Mamuya Village, Galela Sub-district.

"Currently, Mount Dukono's status is at Level II," he stated.

He therefore advised residents around Mount Dukono, as well as visitors and tourists to refrain from climbing and to stay outside a 4-kilometer radius of the Malupang Warirang Crater.

"Given that volcanic ash eruptions occur periodically, and the ash's distribution depends on the wind direction and speed, the ash coverage area is not constant," he explained.

He also reminded nearby residents to always wear masks or coverings over their noses and mouths to guard against the respiratory hazards of volcanic ash.

On Saturday (July 19), at around 12:50 p.m. local time, Dukono PGA officers also reported another eruption, spewing volcanic ash as high as 1,000 meters above the summit.

The eruption also produced a thick column of white to gray ash, tilting northeastward, which was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 20 mm and a duration of 93.84 seconds at the Dukono PGA Post.

Another eruption was recorded on Friday (July 18), at around 10:36 a.m. local time, with volcanic ash rising 1,200 meters above the summit.

Friday's eruption emitted a dense white to gray ash column drifting northeast.

The volcanic activity was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 24 mm and a duration of 66.33 seconds.
