“He (Prabowo) stated that civil servants must work with professionalism and that the IPDN should help drive this push,” the minister said after the inauguration ceremony of the IPDN graduates at the IPDN Campus in Sumedang, West Java, on Monday.
President Prabowo was initially scheduled to speak to the 1,110 graduates and induct them as civil servants. However, he had to skip the graduation ceremony due to his upcoming meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Karnavian said that the head of state has been paying close attention to the IPDN, considering that the institute produces talents who are well-prepared to run the bureaucracy.
“He is truly concerned about civil servants. Without professional civil servants, government administration and development efforts will not run,” he added.
The minister further quoted the President as saying that civil servants are the spearheads of national development efforts, adding that the IPDN has contributed a significant number of civil servants, whose strength currently stands at around four million.
Graduates of the institute tend to be directly appointed as bureaucrats with the central government or regional government institutions across Indonesia.
President Prabowo, Karnavian said, conveyed his apology to the graduates and their families for his non-attendance.
“He conveyed a message of apology to the graduates and their parents, hoping they are not disappointed and understand that the state has called for him for an urgent matter,” the minister added.
Earlier, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Bima Arya Sugiarto, informed the media that the President decided to cancel his plan to attend the IPDN ceremony to prepare for his meeting with Prime Minister Anwar.
When contacted from the IPDN campus on Monday, he said that the head of state also has urgent matters to attend to regarding government coordination at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
Prabowo, therefore, delegated Minister Karnavian to preside over the inauguration on his behalf.
