Banjarmasin (ANTARA) - South Kalimantan's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) enhances coordination and community understanding through a public outreach campaign on weather and climate literacy to prepare for the dry season and forest and land fires (karhutla).

Klaus Johannes Apoh Damanik, Head of the Class I Climatology Station in South Kalimantan, stressed the importance of understanding weather and climate information—particularly that issued by BMKG—as a reference for operational decisions in the field.

“As we enter this dry season, it is critical that everyone understands and accurately interprets information from BMKG so it can serve as the basis for anticipatory measures, especially in dealing with forest and land fires,” he remarked during the virtual opening of the outreach event on Tuesday.

He also underscored the importance of receiving inputs from stakeholders about the types of information needed on the ground.

He noted that such feedback will help BMKG enhance the quality and accuracy of its services to support disaster mitigation efforts.

“We welcome input from all parties so that the information we provide becomes more applicable and impactful in the field. It is not just about weather data, but how that data can be used by operational teams during fire incidents,” he remarked.

The event included several speakers from BMKG and technical partners, featuring an interactive discussion session aimed at better addressing on-site challenges through the use of accurate weather data.

He expressed hope that all participants would gain valuable insights from the initiative to help safeguard communities from the threat of wildfires.

“We hope this event benefits us all in our shared mission to protect the public from the dangers of forest and land fires,” he added.
