Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of the House of Representatives (DPR) Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo assessed that revising the Law on Human Trafficking Eradication is necessary to adopt a victim-centered approach.

According to Rahayu, Law Number 21 of 2007 concerning Human Trafficking Eradication focuses more on delivering justice through punishing perpetrators than on addressing victims' needs.

The legislator made this statement at a press conference following the Public Discussion on World Day against Trafficking in Persons in Jakarta on Thursday.

She observed that the law is very outdated and needs revision to keep pace with changing times, as various modus operandi of human trafficking perpetrators have evolved and changed.

Consequently, she underscored the need to update the law, especially in terms of digital aspects, cyberspace, and crimes such as online fraud or scams.

In her capacity not only as a legislator but also as Chairperson of the National Network of Anti-Human Trafficking, Djojohadikusumo affirmed her commitment to ensuring victims' voices are heard.

"Many of them (victims) seek justice, especially concerning long-term issues," she remarked.

She noted that this includes assurance of recovery centers across Indonesia to help victims rebuild productive and independent lives.

At the same event, Deputy Minister of Law Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej emphasized that the Law on Human Trafficking Eradication will be aligned with Law Number 12 of 2022 on Sexual Violence Crimes, particularly regarding the victim endowment fund.

He remarked that the law will put greater emphasis on restitution and compensation for victims of human trafficking.

He further stated that the law will be integrated with the Immigration Law, which already covers human smuggling.

"Thus, in essence, in dealing with human trafficking, we need synergy, collaboration, courage, and advocacy for the victims," the deputy minister stressed.
