Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI), Christina Aryani, has highlighted the need for measures to prevent the illegal placements of migrant workers to ensure they do not get exploited and trafficked.

“We found that many human trafficking cases began with the unprocedural (illegal) placement of migrant workers, making prevention very important,” the deputy minister told ANTARA here on Thursday.

Her statement, which underlines one of the challenges to controlling human trafficking cases, coincided with the commemoration of World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on July 30.

According to Aryani, efforts to prevent the non-procedural placement of migrant workers are very important. The Ministry of P2MI has realized that it cannot work independently to implement prevention efforts.

Therefore, it has initiated a joint effort with the regional police to prevent illegal migration. So far, seven regional police forces have joined the effort.

Since its establishment last year, the ministry has successfully prevented 4,822 prospective migrant workers from being sent abroad illegally, which would have put them at risk of being exploited or falling victim to human trafficking.

“Over the past nine months, 4,822 prospective unprocedural migrant workers have been prevented from leaving illegally, a departure that could potentially lead them to human trafficking cases,” she said.

The ministry, with the help of the Riau Regional Police, recently succeeded in thwarting the departure of 100 prospective migrant workers, who were going to be sent abroad non-procedurally, and arrested 11 human trafficking suspects.

Other efforts undertaken by the ministry include the launch of the Migrant Worker Protection Coordination Desk program and the establishment of migrant worker protection service posts (P4MI).

It has also taken action against problematic Indonesian migrant worker placement companies (P3MI) and brokers and formed a rapid response team as well as a cyber patrol team.

Efforts to promote safe migration are also ongoing, in collaboration with various stakeholders, in addition to public service announcements through social media and the ministry website to raise awareness about illegal recruitment, Aryani said.
