"BPOM has taken firm action against these cosmetics found to contain hazardous and/or prohibited ingredients. BPOM has revoked the distribution permits and temporarily suspended their activities, which included halting production, distribution, and importation," BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar stated in Jakarta on Friday.
The findings resulted from BPOM's intensified routine monitoring of cosmetics circulating in the market from April to June 2025. Most of the findings, totaling 28 items, are still manufactured through contract production. Two products found were locally produced, while four were imported.
Sampling and testing confirmed that all these products contained hazardous and/or prohibited ingredients that could pose health risks to consumers. The prohibited and/or hazardous ingredients found included mercury, retinoic acid, hydroquinone, lead, Methanyl yellow dye, and steroids.
The health risks posed by hazardous and/or prohibited ingredients in cosmetics vary widely, ranging from mild to severe.
Among other things, mercury can cause skin discoloration in the form of dark spots, allergic reactions, skin irritation, headaches, diarrhea, vomiting, and even kidney damage. Retinoic acid can cause dry skin, burning sensations, and changes in the shape or function of fetal organs in pregnant women.
Furthermore, hydroquinone in cosmetics can cause hyperpigmentation, exogenous ochronosis, and discoloration of the cornea and nails. Lead in cosmetics may impair the functions of organs and body systems. Methanyl yellow, a prohibited dye, is carcinogenic and can damage the liver, nervous system, and brain.
The BPOM has recalled 34 cosmetic products for containing hazardous and/or prohibited ingredients: AENI BEAUTIFUL SECRET Facial Wash, ASTRID GLOW'S Body Serum Booster, BOGOTA DIAMONDGLOW Night Cream, CHARISMALUX Acne Treatment, CHARISMALUX Extra Whitening, EMGLOW Night Cream X2T Acne, GWS BY AGT Gold Jelly Luxury HG, HRA COSMETIC Facial Wash, HRA COSMETIC Toner, KHOJATI DELUX SURMA, LIEBIESKIN Bright Glow Night Cream, and MILA GLOW Night Cream.
