Jakarta (ANTARA) - The central government has advised public officials against acting arrogantly, particularly when crafting and communicating policies, to avoid public anger, State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said here on Wednesday.

Hadi made the statement in reference to Pati district head, Sudewo, who was accused of arrogance, particularly in his handling of a people’s protest against a 250-percent hike in local land and building taxes.

Although Sudewo has withdrawn the policy amid strong public protest, many people in Pati are still demanding that the district head resign from office.

“Many times we, the central government, have reminded public officials, be it at the central, provincial, or regional levels, to realize that we need to be careful in communicating everything, also communicating policies that can impact the people,” the minister said.

He informed that President Prabowo Subianto is also monitoring the situation in Pati district. Prabowo has expressed regret over the protest descending into chaos due to public anger and disappointment with Sudewo.

At least one hundred thousand people from the United Pati People Alliance protested in front of the Pati district head’s office in Central Java earlier on Wednesday, demanding he resign from the post.

The situation escalated when Sudewo arrived at the protest to listen to people’s demands.

His presence upset the protesters, who hurled footwear and bottles at him. A car was also set ablaze in the process. Police then arrested 11 persons for inciting the attacks.

Minister Hadi said that he respected the people’s decision to stage a protest in front of the official’s office, but called for calm.

“First of all, we the central government are concerned, and urge everyone to control themselves. We also personally communicate with Mr. District Head, I also consistently monitor the situation, communicate with Central Java Governor,” he said.

He expressed the hope that the situation would be resolved in the best possible manner.
