BI Governor Perry Warjiyo stated that the rollout marks the expansion of the system beyond the ASEAN border and a milestone in Indonesia's efforts to facilitate cross-border payment.
"Since its launching six years ago, QRIS has become a game changer for the digital payment ecosystem and strengthened Indonesia's economic sovereignty," Warjiyo stated here.
Highlighting QRIS users that have reached its 57-million mark, the central bank head expressed hope that its expansion will bolster economic cooperation between Indonesia and Japan.
Warjiyo explained that in its first stage, QRIS users can access 35 merchants in Japan by scanning the JPQR Global with Indonesia's domestic payment applications that cover mobile banking of 14 national and regional banks and various mobile wallet applications.
In the future, Indonesia will work to ensure that more merchants in Japan are accessible by QRIS, thereby facilitating transactions carried out by QRIS users in Japan.
Likewise, Indonesia will expand the coverage of Japanese merchants in the Indonesian market, allowing more Japanese to pay through QRIS by their domestic payment applications.
Bank Indonesia stated that the Indonesia-Japan cross-border QRIS rollout was conducted through a collaboration between Bank Indonesia and the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI) with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), Payment Japan Association (PJA), JPQR Global operator Netstars, and other parties.
The QRIS launch for the Japanese market was conducted following a series of technical steps up to the sandbox trial stage with the Japanese payment system authority, beginning in mid-May 2025.
